It is the most common choice for serious outdoor kitchens in this region and it is close to maintenance free.
Stainless steel
Excellent structurally and it suits a contemporary look. The important detail is the grade. 304 stainless is the usual specification, but in a genuinely coastal setting 316 stainless resists salt pitting far better. Cheaper stainless will develop rust freckles within a year near the water.
Teak and other marine hardwoods
Beautiful, and naturally oily enough to resist rot. The tradeoff is upkeep. Left alone, teak silvers to grey, which some people want and some do not. Keeping the original colour means re oiling on a schedule.
Powder coated aluminium
Light, rust proof and available in many colours. The powder coating is the weak point: once it is chipped through to bare metal, corrosion starts at that spot. Good quality coating and careful handling matter.

Cabinet bodies often outlast their hinges. Marine grade stainless hinges and slides cost more and are the difference between doors that still work in five years and doors that have to be forced.
Drainage
Outdoor cabinets should be designed to let water out. Drain slots in the base and a slight fall on horizontal surfaces prevent standing water sitting inside a closed cabinet in August.
Ventilation around heat
Built in grills need proper clearance and venting. This is a fire safety matter as much as a cabinet longevity one, and it is written into the grill manufacturer’s installation requirements.
Raising the base
Cabinets that sit directly on a lanai deck wick up water after heavy rain. A raised or sealed base keeps the bottom edge out of standing water.
How much shelter do you actually have?

Simple maintenance that extends life
Rinse cabinet faces with fresh water every few weeks through the season, particularly if you are close to the water. Salt that gets rinsed away cannot sit and work. Wipe down stainless with the grain and dry it. Check hardware once a year and replace anything showing corrosion before it seizes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use indoor cabinets if the lanai is fully screened?
We would not recommend it. Screened lanais still see high humidity, salt air and blown rain. Indoor cabinets in that setting typically start failing within a couple of years.
Is marine polymer expensive compared with stainless?
They are broadly comparable, and both cost more than indoor cabinetry. The comparison that matters is against replacing failed cabinets once or twice.
What about the worktop?
Granite and porcelain handle outdoor conditions well. Some quartz products are not rated for UV exposure and can discolour, so check the specific product before committing.
Can existing outdoor cabinets be repaired?
